PORCH FEST – WORKING DRAFT, NOT FOR PUBLIC SHARE YET / NOR APPROVED BY PARADE

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds, cannot change anything.”

–George Bernard Shaw

These words, written by the famed Irish playwright, are incredibly relevant given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the tribulations it has brought to our daily lives! We must, it seems almost every minute, be ready and willing to change our minds and how we approach challenges. The arts, the immediate application of creativity, has always been a major force for change and a gift to all those who utilize it.

It is with that spirit of creativity and adaptability that Scranton Fringe has joined forces with the Scranton St. Patrick’s Parade Association & The City of Scranton to create…

SCRANTON PORCH-FEST is a city-wide event centered on community, Scranton’s diverse cultural history and a joyful celebration that everyone can take part in!

Since the city cannot safely celebrate its most popular tradition (the parade) – we are inviting everyone and helping anyone we can to turn their own homes into parade floats!

We are inviting citizens to transform their homes, their business storefront’s, their porch, their patios, their front yards, their fences (and whatever else they can think of) into stationary parade floats – think BIG and be creative!

Part of our inspiration comes from what New Orleans is doing in lieu of their historic, large-scale Mardi Gras celebrations! See a few examples below to get your own creative gears turning:

Megan Boudreaux, founder of Krewe of House Floats, outside of her own home and “USS House Float,” in Algiers Point, New Orleans.
“Queen of Bounce House,” on Laurel Street in New Orleans.
“Little Shop of 2020 Horrors” house float on Bouny Street in Algiers Point, New Orleans.

Embrace your Celtic creativity and create the most incredible immersive Irish themed porch-float you wish OR team up with your neighbors and decide on your own theme. In addition to our treasured St. Patrick’s Day this time of year also marks numerous other celebrations such as the long awaited return of spring (Equinox), Easter, Passover, etc. You also could team up with your neighbors to create your own unique theme embracing any artistic idea or cultural representation you see fit!
