The Ferment

How much can happen in 15 years? In the world of Alicia Lynn Grega's The Ferment, the U.S. has fractured. The Pacific Free State plans to share infrastructure, mandate equality, and provide the most basic of universal basic income to its citizens after the Redveil pandemic and Meltdown of 2035 obliterated the economy. But the Common Good can't be extended to the millions of climate refugees desperate to survive and no one feels secure. Like a lot of young people, Sonja gave up on the future. Her father, the scientist Ellison Somone, famously died from Redveil just as he discovered the cure. She started going to parties instead of going to class - until her brother Paul left home to live on the streets. Determined to comfort her mother and stabilize her family, Sonja straightens out under the steadying influence of her mentor, Dr. Barnes. As The Ferment opens, an assignment leads Sonja to a dangerous political protest and a group of young activists led by the charismatic Noel. Sparks fly and her world explodes. This world premiere performance of The Ferment includes the first two episodes of an original new audio drama recorded live for future podcast release with a full cast, provocative sound design, and audience members participating as extras. Casting begins mid-July 2026. Those interested in collaborating with Common Play Factory are encouraged to contact Alicia at dramastruction@gmail.com. "Service to community is more powerful than selfish pursuit."
