StorySlams

five minutes, all true, no notes

Founded by Pamela and Zoë McNichols in 2012, and part of Scranton Fringe since 2016, the Scranton StorySlam brings together the Electric City’s most colorful characters in a head-to-head storytelling competition.

Each storyteller is challenged to captivate the audience with a true tale told in just about five minutes – and each StorySlam has a theme to tie the night together. We have grown this program over the years to include a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019 at Teviot House, presented by the Gilded Balloon.

This is a photo of a large crowd of different people of all shape sizes and color are sitting under what appears to be an outdoor pavilion with globe lights, strong across the ceiling. They are all looking at the same direction toward Ward something beyond the view of the picture.
This image shows a live storytelling event with four people on stage in front of an audience. A man at the center stands at a microphone, speaking, while two others to his left smile and watch. Behind them, a banner reads “BIG GAY STORY SLAM – A celebration of LGBTQ voices and allies”, with the words “Story Slam” in colorful rainbow letters. The stage is dimly lit with blue and purple spotlights, creating an intimate performance setting.
This photo shows a poloroid style print with the word 2018 written in red hand script at the bottom. The image on the print shows a smiling woman holding a large gold trophy while wearing a colorful balloon crown. The crown is made of long twisted balloons in rainbow colors with white balloons forming a tall, elaborate frame. She’s wearing glasses and a red sweater, and appears to be celebrating indoors at an event, with a stage and golden curtain in the background.
This photo shows a poloroid style print with the word 2020 written in red hand script at the bottom. The image on the print shows two people on stage in front of a banner reading "The Big Gay Story Slam: A celebration of LGBTQ+ stories and allies!" One person, is a drag queen dressed in a glamorous patterned dress and dramatic makeup, is striking a lively pose with a wide, expressive face. The other person, smiling warmly, holds a trophy, suggesting they are a winner or honoree of the event. The mood is celebratory and full of pride.

By weaving narratives that range from humorous to heartfelt, the performers create a tapestry of life experiences that resonate.

StorySlams offer a dynamic and irresistible blend of theatre, memoir, and documentary artistry, making each event a unique celebration of both creativity and the human experience.
