SCRANTON-MADE THEATRE WORK “ULYSSES OF SCRANTON” HEADS TO EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL
Local performances set for July 24 and 25 at Sanctuary Theater before international run at the world’s largest arts festival
SCRANTON, PA — Ulysses of Scranton, an original theatre work produced by Scranton Fringe and The New Vintage Ensemble, will travel this August to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.
Before the production heads overseas, regional audiences will have two opportunities to see the show in Scranton. Ulysses of Scranton will be performed Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sanctuary Theater, located at 1735 N. Main Ave. in Scranton. Tickets are $20 and are available now at scrantonfringe.org.
Written and directed by Conor Kelly O’Brien, Ulysses of Scranton is a fast-moving, ensemble-driven theatre piece inspired by James Joyce’s landmark novel Ulysses and reframed through a distinctly Northeastern Pennsylvania lens. The production features Mandy Pennington, Kimmie Leff, Colin Holmes, Werner Christensen, and Simone Daniel.
The show premiered at the 2025 Scranton Fringe Festival and later traveled to Ballina, Ireland, to be performed as part of Scranton’s sister-city relationship with Ballina. Its upcoming run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe marks a major international milestone for the Scranton-made production and for the local artists and organizations behind it.
Ulysses of Scranton will perform at Bedlam Theatre in Edinburgh from August 7 through 29.
“This is an incredible opportunity — not just for us as artists and for Scranton Fringe as a producing organization — but for our entire regional arts scene,” said Conor Kelly O’Brien, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Scranton Fringe. “It is further proof that Scranton and Northeast PA are a viable cultural ecosystem to create and nurture new independent, professional theatre work.”
This is not the first time Scranton Fringe and its creative team have presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with successful runs in 2017 and 2019 of other work.
The July performances at Sanctuary Theater will give local audiences the chance to support the company before the production travels abroad. The performances will also help the creative team continue sharpening the piece for its Edinburgh run.
Tickets for the July 24 and 25 Scranton performances are $20 and are available now at scrantonfringe.org.
